One would be remiss if we were not to mention the many opportunities that have been presented to us over the years. Through the American Lutheran Churches Department of Evangelism we were inspired and challenged by several visiting Evangelists who came to us with programs and week long bible studies. Then there were the special events such as Basic Youth Conflicts, Billy Graham Crusades and Lutheran Lay Renewal. These programs inspired us to new heights in our spiritual commitment and taught us also to love one another. More recently Gloria Dei participated in the nation wide 40 days of Purpose program sponsored by the Saddleback Church in Southern California. This program spawned new small groups within the congregation and inspired us to use the talents which the Lord has given to us. All of these programs were great and can be summed up by three basic actions: 1) Spend time reading and studying God’s word, 2) Love God with all your heart, and 3) Love one another.

The Lord’s Pantry was initiated in the mid 70’s by the Board of Deacons to provide funds to Pastor Larson so that he could assist people with meals, fuel and other necessities which he was initially paying for himself. Later in 1978 when Lucy Cullison joined the ministry here at Gloria Dei as our Hispanic Outreach Program Director, she expanded our original concept to include financial and material assistance from outside agencies, businesses, Churches and even including the local government food banks. Through the efforts of a dedicated staff, this ministry continues to grow and still operates today from our Parish House providing food to virtually hundreds of families each year. This ministry relies almost entirely on volunteer labor and serves the people of this area even during the very busy holiday seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Today the Lord's Pantry is Directed by Martha Perez and continues to serve the community around our church. Last year the Pantry served a total of 26,637 Individuals.

The care of another--even material, bodily care--is spiritual in essence. Bread for myself is a material question; bread for my neighbor is a spiritual one.
